Study on the Gastro-intestinal Side Effects of Oral Contraceptives

Abstract
This study was begun in January 1974 in order to learn the reason for the gastro-intestinal trouble, nausea and vomiting due to taking oral contraceptives, and to find -means of reducing the frequency of these symptoms.
The recruitment of clients was done through the maternal and child health and family planning clinic, Yonhee Community Health Service, Yonsei University Medical Center.
The clients recruited were divided into groups, experimental and control. The study used the double blind control study methodology.
The experimental group received antiacid and digestant with the oral contraceptive, while the control group received only a placebo with contraceptives.
The outstanding findings of this study are as follows;
1) Total number of clients recruited for this study was 114, ranging in age from 20 to 39. The mode of the number of living children was 2 to 4 and that of their education was less than primary school education.
2) For pregnancy history, the number of pregnancies ranged from 0 to 8, and to experience rate of the induced abortion and the spontaneous abortion was revealed 44.0o and 14.9% respectively.
3) For menstrual history, the mode of their menstrual cycle was 28 days and regular. The mode duration of menstrual bleeding was 4 to 5 days and the amount of menstrual bleeding was moderate.
4) The mean frequency of gastro-intestinal symptoms among all the women after taking of one cycle oral contraceptive was 11.300. Among those symptoms, indigestion was most frequent at 42.100.
5) The frequency of side effects in the experimental group was higher than that in the placebo group.
In conclusion, it was very hard to say whether the gastro-intestinal troubles after taking the oral contraceptive was oral contraceptive induced or p-sychogenic.
According to the investigator¢¥s interpretatioxl, of this simple study¢¥s results, the reason for gastro-intestinal trouble might be a result of the oral contraceptive.
Therefore, the results seem to indicate that if antiacid and digestant were given with oral contraceptives, the frequency of gastro-intestinal side effects could be reduced.
